Tips for Finding a New Mechanic in Doylestown

Doylestown Mechanic BBack Car CareMost people don’t know much about cars. That’s OK; most people don’t know much about law, which is why they hire lawyers or they don’t know much about health, so they go to the doctor. There are countless examples, which is why there are so many places that specialize in various services. Just look around our town of Doylestown, PA and all the incredible businesses around us.

The issue that some folks run into is that when you interact with these specialists, they rely solely on their claimed expertise without doing their own homework. Any expert, such as a baker, photographer, plumber or car mechanic should be able to answer questions about the services performed and to justify their work and fees.

If you are looking for a new mechanic, either because you are new to the Doylestown area or you are looking for better quality and service, it’s important that you ask the right questions and do some homework on the various shops you decide to contact.

Here are some ideas on preliminary research:

    Reviews

Well reviewed mechanics have the customer backing to prove that they practice what they preach: Quality service, fair pricing and great customer service.

    Community Recognition

Furthermore, if they have received any recognition from their community, that is a strong sign that they are a well respected business.

    Volunteerism

Lastly, many folks like to see that a company gives back to the community in some way. It shows that they are connected to their communities (like Doylestown) and customers alike.

    Digital Presence

A mechanic with a strong presence online indicates that they are invested in their business and its success. And, they have convenience in mind for their customers. Easy to find numbers, maps for GPS and hours of operation are all signs of an organized business.

Here is a list of perfectly valid questions when you call or visit a shop for the first time:

Do you work on all type of vehicles?

Some shops specialize in certain types of vehicles, such as domestic, foreign or commercial fleet vehicles. Some models require additional training and specific skill sets that not all shops have. It’s important to ask if they have staff that is actually trained to work on your car.

    What equipment do you use?

Believe it or not, technology is changing fast in the automotive world. With the pace of technology integration in today’s cars, the mechanics of today are vastly different than the guys that came before us.

As with anything else, there is equipment that gets the job done and others that really go above and beyond to ensure accuracy, increase quality and limit collateral damage. Something as simple as putting a tire on a rim can be a different experience from one shop to the next.

    What certifications do you hold?

Not all shops keep up with training and certifications. As we already mentioned, the industry is evolving quickly, and so too must our knowledge to keep pace.

And, training doesn’t stop at the tech that performs the work on your car either. Training is also highly relevant for the service writers and front office staff who work with the customer.

What replacement parts do you use?

Not all parts are created equally. There are many options out in the market but a good mechanic will use factory or factory quality parts that will stand up to the task and keep you safe on the road. You also have the right to see the parts being used.

    What is your warranty policy?

A shop that clearly displays and stands behind a warranty means that they are committed to doing a good job on your service or repair.

    What are your rates?

This should be an easy question to answer, and should be easy to understand on a quote or invoice.

How are you different from the dealership?

Many people get roped into servicing their vehicle at the dealerships, and understandably so. Their sales techniques and certain campaigns and coupon strategies are designed to suck you in. They staff very sophisticated and expensive marketing departments for this very reason. But the truth is that there should be little to no difference between a dealership and a well-trained auto repair shop. While there are certain conveniences and luxuries at dealerships, like food, cucumber infused water, car washes and other fancy amenities, you can bet the cost of those things are baked into their prices. Personally, we don’t know when oil changes turned into a spa experience, but they have and at the end of the day, you’re paying for more than you came in for.

There are plenty more questions you can ask but this should give you a great start to your preparation.
