Power steering was invented by Chrysler in the early 1950’s and it essentially makes steering easier through the use of hydraulics. The system is fairly intricate and involves belts, pumps, hoses, connectors and other components to operate. When you turn your steering wheel, the hydraulic system goes to work and you can practically turn your car with a finger.
Because of the all the components and connection points, it’s common to experience steering problems at some point. Corrosion, debris and time all play a hand in degrading various components. Hoses can crack, connectors can loosen, the pump can break down or the belt can slip.
Drivers should be aware of some of the telling signs that their power steering system is failing. We list the most common signs below.
The most obvious sign is difficulty steering. Without power steering, turning the wheel of your car is a chore. Difficulty steering can mean there is a loss of hydraulic fluid due to a leak, a broken pump or a slipped belt. Depending on what’s failing, this can happen quite suddenly or slowly over time. Usually, there are other signs of a failed power steering system that will help further diagnose the issue.
You can check the level of your power steering fluid under the hood of your car. Your owner’s manual can help you identify where to look. If it’s empty, you likely have a leak in a hose or at a connection point. These are most often caused by wear and tear, including corrosion, damage, or years of handling the amount of pressure that is generated by the hydraulic system.
You can also check your parking spot or driveway for a puddle. Power steering fluid is often red and is another telling sign.
A failing power steering system will make noise. It’s a long, drawn out squealing sound as you turn your wheel in either direction. This can indicate a failing pump or belt.
Power Steering is a vitally important component of your vehicle. Besides comfort and ease of use, a power steering system allows for you to react quickly and easily should you have to avoid anything. It also allows for greater control in areas like parking lots where a lot of steering and finesse is required.
