Tires are one of the most important components of your car. After all, they are the only things on your car that actually touches the road surface. Essentially, your car only as good as the tires you have on it.
A few weeks back there was an uncharacteristic winter storm, and it usually takes that first storm for many people to realize that it is time to get their tires changed. Issues like poor steering, sliding around trying to accelerate, brake or turn; It doesn’t take much for bad tires to rear their ugly head.
This is a topic that we’ve covered before (and if you really want to dig in to the specifics, click here,) but it’s crucially important to remember these tips:
Virtually everything expands and contracts with temperature changes, including air. Tires will lose several pounds of pressure as temperatures dip. It’s always a good idea to check your tire pressure and add a few more pounds in during the winter.
As the image shows, check the tread on your tire. If Lincoln’s head is showing, your tires are nearing the end of their life. Low tread means that the tires are unable to move snow away from the rubber that actually touches the ground. Without sufficient drainage and traction, hydroplaning and other grip issues will start to occur.
Most of the time, all season tires do the trick in the bucks county region. However, you can always opt for winter tires. The rubber used to make winter tires are scientifically designed to operate best in lower temperatures, whereas performance and all season tires can harden up and not be as ‘sticky.’
Weigh the pros and cons of having reliable tires on your car versus putting it off and getting stuck or injured on the road with old, worn out tires. Many folks travel for the holidays and missing work or school/children’s activities can make a huge impact on your day.
