Over the past couple of years, we have had a surge of phone calls and inquiries about the cost for a PA’s safety and emission test. It’s great the driving public shops the cost for this testing and it is market driven. Unfortunately, there are businesses that will use deceptive business practices to lure customers in at a very low price. They are called ‘Loss Leaders’.
Everyone should be aware there is actually more to the annual testing than just the fee that is being charged by the certified inspection station. In PA, there is a very thorough and extensive inspection of your vehicle that your car must pass before your car can qualify for the final stickers that gets placed on your windshield. This inspection process opens the door for some questionable repairs of your vehicle by questionable repair shops and questionable mechanics. Thankfully, these types of mechanics and businesses are the few among us.
I find it very challenging to offer this inspection at an extremely low price to the customer and be profitable, i.e. pay my mechanic a fair wage, pay electric, taxes, state fees, cost of the sticker, etc.
When ‘shopping’ for the best price in town for PA safety and emissions testing, be more concerned about the reputations and business practices of the inspection station versus who’s the cheapest guy in town. Or your efforts to save money will be wasted.
