Road Salt – 3 Tips to Shake This Hidden Winter Enemy.

At BBack Car Care, we strive to ensure that you love your car. We do this by ensuring that your car gets the very best in automotive care and top notch customer service. Yet, sometimes, your car needs a little love from you, especially during the winter.

Over the winter months, road crews continuously cover our roads with salt. It sure helps us get from point A to point B, but road salt can be a hidden enemy. Here are 3 easy to follow tips to ensure that you are protected from frequent and costly auto repair needs.

    1. Wash Often

The exposure to caked on salt over a long period of time means corrosion to virtually all metal surfaces, particularly under your car and in those hard to reach spots. Hydraulic brake systems, frame damage, exhaust systems and mufflers are all at the mercy of how often your car gets washed. Most car washes have under carriage cleaning options that will help get to the trouble areas. If you are a ‘do-it-yourself-er’ make sure you have a high powered nozzle for rinses and add a tablespoon of baking soda to help neutralize the salt.

    2. Wax and Seal

Now is a perfect time to give your car a wax and seal to protect the body of the car. Not only are you making your future washes easier on yourself, but you are protecting the look and value of your car. Unfortunately, we cannot avoid the science of rust – it’s inevitable. But, we can fight back and this is a good place to start.

    3. Safe Driving

Perhaps this is an obvious one, but safe driving helps with salt damage. Avoid puddles where road salt builds up and can soak the underside of your vehicle. Deep snow is also a good thing to avoid as it cakes up under your car and holds moisture and salt in place.

Deep snow can also have chunks of ice and other debris accumulated from the plows of road crews, which can kick up and scratch your paint. These scratches are an open invitation for rust to get into the body of your car and eat away at your car.
