3 Quick Tips to Prepare for Winter Hazards

3 Quick Tips to Prepare for Winter Hazards

With the coming of winter weather also come the risks that appear during the winter months. Darkness, fog, wet leaves, deer and frost mean that drivers need to be more alert and their cars need to be ready to respond to the conditions we’ll all be facing on a daily basis.

Here are some quick car care steps to help prepare yourself for winter driving.

    Lights

Winter here in the Bucks County area means that it can get dark as early as 5pm in the dead of winter, so you can expect to drive in the dark much more frequently. Now would be a great time to check all your lights and to make sure that your headlight lamps are free of dirt, debris and fogging. You will see much better during dark/foggy/snowy conditions and others will see you better as well. It’s also not worth the price of a traffic ticket for driving with a light out.

    Wiper Blades

Nothing helps get you from point A to point B quite like being able to see. During adverse conditions, a wiper blade can make a huge impact on your ability to safely drive your car. There are a couple things you can do to make sure your wipers are in good shape.

Clean them – run a rag with wiper fluid down your blade to clear it of any pollen, dirt and grim that may have caked on them. This will help the rubber flex and run along the surface of the glass better.

Protect them – in addition to cleaning them, do not rely on them to get rid of frost and ice, which the rubber is not designed to break up. Allow your car to run for a couple minutes in the morning with the defrosters on and use an ice scraper to clear your windshield.

Replace them – take a look at your blades; if they are cracked, corroded or brittle, it’s time to replace them. This will not only help with visibility but also protect your windshield. If you run bad blades on your windshield, you can scratch your windshield.

    Tires and Brakes

There are many more hazards to consider during the colder months and your need to grip the road and stop are magnified greatly. Wet leaves and ice are common hazards that prevent your tires from gripping the road as well. Deer are also more mobile during the winter as they cover more ground to find food.

Ensure that your tires are in good shape and that there is plenty of tread left. It would also be wise to get your brakes looked at to make sure that they are also in good shape.

An often forgotten part of the breaking system are your calipers, which actually move the break pad onto the rotors. These calipers can seize and stop your breaks from working. This is caused by dirt, dust and grim slowly building up in the calipers.
